Usage of the SGL system

  • The required system depends on many different variables, such as climate conditions, stadium dimensions, desired pitch quality and event schedule. Based on these factors SGL can calculate the required number of lighting hours throughout the entire year. The number of lighting hours will be translated to the system that is required in order to achieve the desired pitch quality.
     
  • If you’re a new customer, you always get start-up advice from our agronomists. For complete insight into the growth conditions of the pitch, we designed a full monitoring system called the SGL Analyser. All data is available through the secure online SGL Portal, which you can use to determine where and when to use the SGL system. You can also get extra support from our agronomists, through the SGL Assist program.
     
  • We advise to move the units every 24 hours for approximately half a meter, to avoid marks on the pitch. The maximum duration of lighting is in most cases 48 hours, but this depends on the light intensity of the system and the ambient conditions. The SGL Portal and our SGL Assist team can help you make the right decisions regarding the duration of using the SGL system.
     
  • The yearly power consumption depends on the number of lighting hours that is required for the pitch treatment. This is different for each stadium. An MU360 consumes 62.7 Kilowatts per hour and an MU50 consumes 12.5 Kilowatts per hour. The average for both the MU360 and MU50 is approximately 2000 to 3000 running hours per year. With our growth models, our agronomists can help you precisely forecasting the power consumption and related costs for a full year.
     
  • For the LU440 and the smaller units, only one person is needed to move the systems. We advise to move the MU360 with two persons. With the Electric Drive, optional on the MU360 or LU440, it is possible to move this unit by one person by using a remote control.
     
  • The process is called photosynthesis. Light, Photosynthetic Active Radiation in particular, is the energy source for every plant. The plant converts light energy into chemical energy, which is used to produce carbohydrate and oxygen. Carbohydrate can be seen as food for the plant. Without light, there would be no photosynthesis, which means no food for the plant to live and grow. When grass is used for playing sports, there’s a certain amount of light energy required to achieve and keep the desired quality, depending on various factors such as type of sport, frequency of use and ambient conditions. For most places in the world, sunlight isn’t sufficient for achieving and keeping that quality. The SGL system works with High Pressure Sodium light with high PAR (Photosynthetic Active Radiation).
     
  • In general, the temperature at grass level (plant temperature) increases with 4 to 8 degrees Celsius when the system is in operation. This varies with humidity and wind conditions. If required, the temperature increase can be made higher with the use of special turf covers.
     
  • The unit may of course be used during rain and all sorts of weather conditions. Our units are used without any problems all across the world in various climates, from heavy rains and snow to dry climates with high temperatures and a lot of dust.
     
  • Too much light could damage the grass, but the chances are very small. It is very important to always beware of the growth factors, such as temperatures and humidity. The SGL Portal and the SGL Assist team can support you in making the right decisions regarding the duration of the SGL system usage.
     
  • Usage of the lighting units for less than 6 hours is not efficient.
     
  • Yes, all SGL units are equipped with a timer, allowing you to set up to 56 different switching programs. The timer can be programmed manually, through the unit’s control box or with a chip through special software on your computer. The units from our LU range are equipped the SmartBox. The Smartbox has many useful features, such as setting the switching times of the SGL system on your smartphone or the SGL Portal.
     
  • With the MU360 1000 Watt it is possible to run the system at 50% capacity (and thus power consumption) and still have a similar light distribution across the lighting footprint. It is not possible to dim the lights. You can determine the intensity by adjusting the time of usage. The longer the illumination, the higher the intensity and vice versa.
     

SGL system product characteristics

  • The number stands for the treated area in square meters, the lighting footprint. SGL uses a scientific approach to determine the lighting footprint. Instead of simply measuring the area where light is still visible, we determine the footprint by using official light calculations and only including those areas in the footprint that are treated above a specific light level. For all our units the lighting footprint analysis, which clearly shows the measurement variables and results, can be requested.
     
  • The height of the LU440, MU360 and MU50 is approximately 1,90 meters above grass level. Based on many researches, we have found this to be the ideal height for the design of our units. It provides the best combination between light intensity, uniformity and grass temperature increase. Some of our smaller units have a lamp height of 1.50 meters, to allow for more intense treatment in small high wear areas.
     
  • The SGL units are designed in such a way that they require a minimum of storage space when not in use. Storage requirements range from 9 m2 for our smallest MU18 to 28m2 for the MU360 and LU440. The units can be stored outside and some models even allow cars to be parked underneath, to maximize storage solutions on match days.
     
  • All new SGL units currently being sold are equipped with High Pressure Sodium bulbs, available in 600 and 1000 Watts. These are custom purpose bulbs producing high levels of PAR light, thereby creating photosynthesis.
     
  • Light intensity is quantified in Micromols (μmol). We measure the light intensity by μmol/m2/s. When looking at light energy we only look at that part of the light that provides Photosynthetic Active Radiation (PAR). This is the light that will create photosynthesis and thus growth for the grass.
     
  • All the units are built of high quality and sustainable materials. The units from our LU and IQ range are built of aluminium and all our other lighting units are built of (galvanized) steel.
     
  • The lifespan of the SGL system is at least 8 years. The bulbs and reflectors need replacing approximately every 3 to 4 years.
     
  • The bulbs (and reflectors) have an economic lifespan of approximately 10.000 running hours (3 to 4 years).
     
  • Units can be shipped by sea freight or road freight. When shipped by sea freight, the units will be loaded into 40FT High Cube containers. By road they will be loaded into a truck.
     
  • The delivery time depends on the type of unit ordered, the delivery location and the time of order. The average delivery time is 2 to 8 weeks.
     
  • SGL SELECT are previously owned lighting units, that come at very accessible rental and purchase prices. The SELECT units are thoroughly inspected and come in good condition. Therefore we offer the same warranty of 12 months for our SELECT units as our new units. SGL SELECT units are available in limited quantities and are supplied on a first come, first served base.
     
  • Yes, SGL offers all equipment as rental and purchase. Please contact us for the possibilities.
     
  • All SGL products have a warranty of 12 months from the date of installation.
     
  • It is recommended to have an annual mechanical and electrical check performed by a qualified service engineer. SGL offers maintenance contracts for this. We advise to clean the bulbs and reflectors twice a year.
     
  • Yes, we offer service plans that can include:
    - Relamping: replacing the bulbs and reflectors after three years or 10.000 running hours
    - Preventive maintenance: yearly maintenance by one of our SGL service mechanics
    - Supply of all spare parts
    - Emergency repairs of a malfunction
     
  • Yes, the SGL system is available worldwide.
     
  • European units operate on 400 Volts. Other voltages are available, for North America for example. The SGL system can operate anywhere, with all available power voltages and frequencies.
     

SGL Analyser and Portal

  • The SGL Analyser is a data monitoring system that provides you with full 24/7 insight into the growth conditions of the pitch. All data is available through the secure online SGL Portal.

  • The SGL Analyser system has been developed to respond to the continually changing growing conditions. A timely response to these changes enables maximum results to be obtained from the SGL system. The data is used to feed the growth model, which we use to formulate a forecast that shows you where and when to place the lighting units on the pitch. The SGL Analyser offers you additional insight so that resources can be used more efficiently. The Analyser allows you to increase the quality of your pitch and/or save money on running costs of the SGL system.
     
  • Customers that are subscribed to the SGL Assist program get a personal login to the SGL Portal for accessing the SGL Analyser data and analyses.
     
  • No, the SGL Analyser is optional.
     
  • The SGL Portal gives information on pitch usage and quality, running hours of the SGL system and growing conditions. >> More information about the SGL Portal.
     
  • SGL Assist is the supporting tool that assists the groundsman and stadium management in making the best decisions on pitch treatment, combined with cost efficiency.
